The horror movie genre has come a long way since the 1800s. Case and point: The short film The Dancing Skeleton, which frightened audiences in 1897, features a skeleton dancing the world’s least-creepy jig. But early attempts at scaring moviegoers paved the way for bigger frights like 1973’s The Exorcist, 1980’s The Shining, and even 2016’s The Witch. To document the evolution of the horror film and celebrate its history, Brazilian film editor Diego Carrera created a compilation spanning 122 films, selecting iconic scenes from each and creatively splicing them together. Watch the 12-minute “A History of Horror” below to see just how far the genre has come.
