In Los Angeles, Christopher Columbus’ ship has officially sailed.
After passing legislation that ruled Columbus and his connection to brutality and slavery unfit to celebrate, Los Angeles celebrated its first Indigenous Peoples Day — and a downtown statue of the explorer was covered up and fenced in to underline the city’s departure from the 80-year-old holiday, according to CBS Los Angeles.
The city reportedly made no announcement that the statue would be covered, but the outlet noted that other Columbus statues in cities like New York have been vandalized or defaced.
The city of Los Angeles has until 2019 to officially create the new holiday, which will fall on the second Monday of October in the county.
