For the first time, the latest installment of the “Far Cry” video game series will be set in the United States and its villains bear some resemblance to the white supremacist groups that seem to be more active in recent years.
Typically, the game is located in some fictional country in Africa or Asia and protagonists fight the heavily armed local population. But the script was flipped for the latest iteration. This time it’s set in Montana, and the bad guys are a militant Christian cult, Polygon reports.
Ubisoft, the game studio behind the first-person shooter, released the trailer for “Far Cry 5” Friday. The cover art for the game was shared earlier this week, featuring a blatant “Last Supper” allusion, a wide array of arms, and a Church in the background.
It’s a rarity for a first-person shooter like “Far Cry” to be set on U.S. soil, and even more rare for the antagonists to be American citizens. That will likely stir some controversy.
“Far Cry 5” is set for release this fall.
