For the second time in its history, Macallan has released a very limited run of a nonvintage offering. From its well-regarded Sherry Oak range, just 500 bottles of the Macallan 40-Years-Old were made available at the end of 2016. Distilled from a single sherry-seasoned oak cask, hand-picked by Macallan’s whisky maker Bob Dalgarno, this single malt is the product of decades of careful maturation and prized for its unique flavor.
“Already matured for three decades, the whiskey in this refill butt was kept at its natural strength,” Macallan said. “When it reached 35 years of age in 2011 it was assessed again, and a decision was made to allow the whiskey to continue to mature and develop character.”
With only 70 bottles available in the U.S., the other 430 were sold to customers in the Channel Islands, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, there was also just a limited time to register to purchase a bottle, so our guess is that they’re all gone. But keep your eyes peeled through the “other” normal channels: Bonhams, Sotheby’s, and Christie’s; one is bound to pop up at auction.
