In 1954, Steve and Gayle Henson bought a ranch in San Marcos Pass, California that they renamed Hidden Valley Ranch. Steve often whipped up a buttermilk dressing, which people adored, including guests who stayed at their Hidden Valley Ranch.

Indeed, people loved it so much that the couple decided to start a mail-order business, with people sending 75 cents for a flavoring pack. It was so successful that by 1973, big companies came sniffing around.
