R13’s claims of “punk rock” for their new spring 2017 collection are a bit bold (GG Allin patches and Misfits shirts notwithstanding), but their collaboration with Southwick is certainly daring and interesting— especially given the conservative tastes of white collar fashion.
Pairing rocker staples like patched jackets and shredded denim with more upscale pieces like crombie coats, crisp button-down shirts, and fitted trousers, R13’s spring looks have a dive bar Brooks Brothers feel to them.
Spokespeople from the fashion brand say that “combustible masculinity” and “the rebellious youth of 1980s England,” where outdated thrift store clothes were given new life by the UK’s burgeoning punk movement, inspired their spring look.
There’s a bit more money and strategic thought behind R13’s designs, though, and if they’re going for that Malcolm McLaren/Vivienne Westwood “social rebel” vibe, they’re heading in the right direction.
