It may be considered Hollywood’s second biggest night, but the Golden Globes are certainly much more fun for movie and television fans than either the stuffier Oscars or the Emmys. Maybe it is the open bar that has celebrities looser by the end of the night—or just that mysterious band of journalists that makes up the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which votes on the awards.
They clearly loved La La Land, which won all seven awards it was up for, including best musical or comedy, best director (Damien Chazelle), best actress in a musical or comedy (Emma Stone), and best actor in a musical or comedy (Ryan Gosling). That musical’s main Academy Award competition, Moonlight, won for best drama.
There were some surprises—Oscar favorite Natalie Portman lost in the best actress in a drama category to France’s Isabelle Huppert for Elle. But hey, it is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The biggest drama? Meryl Streep’s speech accepting the Cecile B. DeMille lifetime achievement award in which she slammed President-elect Donald Trump for making fun of a disabled reporter.
On the TV side, new shows Atlanta and The Crown dominated.
