After receiving “years” of requests from families around the United States, the Boy Scouts of America will now accept girls into the Cub Scouts while also creating a new program for older girls, according to the Los Angeles Times. The changes are expected to go into effect in 2018 and 2019.
“This decision is true to the BSA’s mission and core values outlined in the Scout Oath and Law. The values of Scouting — trustworthy, loyal, helpful, kind, brave and reverent, for example — are important for both young men and women,” Michael Surbaugh, the group’s chief executive, reportedly said in a statement.
The program for older girls will also allow them to earn the Eagle Scout rank.
