Lefthand turns at four-way intersections often make new drivers nervous and for good reason: They’re risky and inefficient. The “Diverging Diamond” Intersection, or DDI, is a creative way of improving high-speed intersections. With shorter distances to cross and more frequent crosswalks, pedestrian safety is increased. These types of intersections are becoming more prevalent, too, appearing on more than 60 roadways in 20-plus states. The Florida Department of Transportation recently announced it would build the state’s first one on I-75 and University Parkway in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Watch the video below to better understand this innovative alternative.
