Michelle Carter, the woman who egged her boyfriend on to commit suicide via text messages, lost her conviction appeal on Monday and is finally going to jail.
Carter, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in June 2017, was ordered by a Taunton, Massachusetts, judge to begin serving her sentence on Monday, Jezebel reported. She was initially sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail after her then-boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, died by suicide in July 2014, and will serve 15 months — the rest will be suspended.
Roy reportedly sat in his Ford F-250 truck in Fairhaven, Massachusetts and inhaled carbon monoxide until he died. Prior to his death, Carter sent Roy a few text messages urging him to “get back in” the vehicle.
“The Roy family is glad to have this aspect of the case over,” the deceased’s parents’ attorney, Eric S. Goldman, said in a statement.
They plan on establishing an suicide prevention organization in their son’s name.
