Willie Nelson is 2,500 songs into his career, and he’s more politically outspoken than ever. At 85, Nelson has gotten behind the Texas Democratic nominee for Senate Beto O’Rourke, and recently spoke to The Guardian about his opposition to Trump’s immigration policies.

“I thought everything that happened there was unforgivable,” Nelson said of the administration’s zero tolerance policy that separates families with children at the border. “I don’t believe in closing the border. Open them suckers up!” Nelson continued.

Nelson also spoke of a political song he’s working on for an upcoming O’Rourke rally. He previewed the lyrics for The Guardian, “The biggest gun we’ve got is called the ballot box/ If you don’t like who’s in there, vote ‘em out.” He and O’Rourke, who was in band when he was younger, played together at Nelson’s July 4th concert, and Nelson said that he and O’Rourke became fast friends because of their shared love of music.
