Opening in more than 3,700 theaters, Tomb Raider, a reboot of the film franchise from the early 2000s that was previously headlined by Angelina Jolie, is tracking to debut between $23 million and $25 million at the North American box office this weekend. Meanwhile, Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, which as been number one for the last four weeks, also looks likely to earn $25 million or so this weekend. If it stays at the top of the cart, the Disney and Marvel superhero blockbuster will be the first film since Avatar (which premiered eight years ago) to prevail for five consecutive weeks. From Warner Bros. and MGM, Tomb Raider includes more about Lara Croft’s beginnings, before she started raiding tombs. The adventurous and fearless archaeologist also embarks on a dangerous journey to solve the mystery of her father’s disappearance. The film also stars Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu and Kristin Scott Thomas. The first film in the original franchise opened to $47.7 million in June 2001. Meanwhile, A Wrinkle in Time, which bowed to a muted $33.1 million in North America last weekend hopes to suffer only a small drop this weekend, since it is really the only broad family film in the marketplace right now. Other openings include Fox’s Love Simon, which is the first film from a major Hollywood studio featuring a gay teen protagonist. It has been widely embraced by critics.
