Understanding Eminem’s Sudden Political Turn

"The Storm" may be something of an apology for Eminem's earlier work.

What’s inspired Eminem to take on a political bent? The Guardian’s Alexis Petridis theorizes that it has to do with the people that made Eminem one of the best-selling artists of the millennium in the first place. When Eminem ranted as alter-ego Slim Shady on hit records like The Marshall Mathers LP, the anti-women and anti-authoritarian venom he espoused shares a lot in common with what we now call the alt-right. As Petridis argues, Eminem’s viral cypher “The Storm” from October was an effort to distance himself from the young white men who may have once loved Slim Shady, and now love Trump.
