Bachelor parties that are focused on survival are here, and they are becoming increasingly popular. Stag weekends that double as an education in self-reliance are becoming a trend, reports CNN. More and more grooms and their friends are choosing to go on outdoor-oriented outing instead of the typical Vegas-style weekends that we saw on The Hangover.
Ben-Jamin Toy, the founder of On Purpose Adventures, an event planning company based in Charleston, South Carolina that organizes around 30 bachelor parties a year, says that “traditional bachelor parties can put up walls. Guys get real when it’s a different environment. Bonding over a campfire is magic. Big, gruff guys open up and just talk about life.”
Guys who are attracted to these survival-themed bachelor parties are using hikers, trail runners, skiers, hunters or the like. They want to learn how to use the techniques taught at the party in case of emergency. Others just want to be outside because they have day jobs that require sitting in an office at a computer all day. Survivalist bachelor parties get their inspiration from TV shows like those hosted by Bear Grylls or even The Walking Dead. Cliff Hodges is the founder of the California outdoor school Adventure Out. He told CNN that for bachelor parties, men are taken into the mountains and taught the priorities of survival: shelter, water, fire and food.
