Teddy Roosevelt’s grandson, Tweed Roosevelt, decided to retrace his legendary ancestor’s trip through the Amazonian River of Doubt (which is now named the Roosevelt River), facing deadly cobras and other perils along the way. Teddy had taken the trip while co-leading a 1,000-mile expedition with a Brazilian general. Three men died on the trip and historians believe the stress led to TR’s death two months later. Tweed retraced his grandfather’s steps as part of a National Wildlife Federation-funded expedition honoring Teddy.
