Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn had a rough day in court on Tuesday — to the great joy of late night talk show host Stephen Colbert.

“Even though Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the F.B.I. last week, Flynn’s lawyer submitted a sentencing memo explaining it wasn’t Flynn’s fault — because ‘agents hadn’t warned Flynn it was a crime to lie to the F.B.I.,’” Colbert quipped on Tuesday’s The Late Show. “Of course, good point! How is he supposed to know? They gotta tell him!”

Judge Emmet G. Sullivan held no punches when he suggested that Flynn’s actions were tantamount to treason against the country whose military he once served.

But the judge also encouraged Flynn to accept his offer to postpone his sentencing so that the former Lieutenant General could have extra time to prove the value of his cooperation with prosecutors, suggesting the possibility that Sullivan might toss Flynn’s guilty plea altogether.
