On the season finale of Saturday Night Live, the NBC sketch comedy series tapped into another famous show’s season finale for its cold open.
And whatever one’s political leanings when it comes to the Trump Administration, mining The Sopranos for a parody about the Mueller investigation 11 years after the mob drama went off the air isn’t exactly cutting-edge comedy.
In the opening, Alec Baldwin’s President Trump meets some associates in a New Jersey diner, while listening to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” in a nod to that controversial Sopranos sendoff. A succession of allies — Kate McKinnon’s Rudy Giuliani, Ben Stiller’s Michael Cohen, Alex Moffatt’s Eric Trump, and Mikey Day’s Donald Trump Jr. — stream in to pay their respects.
In the most memorable moment of the five-minute sketch, Giuliani brags that he went on Fox News “like 20 times, yeah.
“Don’t worry, I told them you were openly colluding with Russia, but then I ended with, ‘So what!?’” McKinnon quips. “I even confessed to some crimes you didn’t do and then I said, ‘What are you going to do? Arrest the president? I dare ya!’”
The punchline, as such, is another guest appearance by Robert De Niro, as Special Counsel Robert Mueller, whose role has been reduced to pacing in the background and glaring. See for yourself in the full clip below:
