The Sex Parties of the Silicon Valley’s Elite

A new book explores why these parties an ethically murky constant in the Bay Area.

The Silicon Valley elite celebrate weekends with drug-heavy sex parties, according to an excerpt of Emily Chang’s new book Brotopia: Breaking Up the Boys’ Club of Silicon Valley published in Vanity Fair. The affairs often start with Molly tablets and last into the morning as attendees split off into twos and threes. The parties, which many anonymous Silicon Valley men spoke about as sexually-liberating and forward-thinking, cater to the hedonism of powerful tech men and create numerous potential landmines for women in the industry. While the men at these parties tend to be wealthy executives, the women often occupy positions of lesser power in tech and parallel industries. The consequences for women choosing to attend or not attend the near-orgies are loaded, as the men for whom the parties exist wield tremendous influence in hiring and reputation-making.
