Saoirse Ronan, who makes her Vogue cover debut on August’s issue, had her first acting job when she was nine years old. Now 24, Ronan, who grew up in Ireland during a time of rapid change, isn’t afraid to speak her mind, even if it means facing backlash. She appeared in a video supporting the reproductive rights campaign in Ireland, a grassroots movement that eventually led to the the government holding a referendum. She said it felt important to speak out, so she did. The star, who is still surprised when people know who she is, recently moved to a small town outside Dublin. She likes to cook, hear live music, and go to the movies.

Ronan grew up on screen. She received her first Oscar nomination when she was 13, for a role in Atonement. She won a Golden Globe for her character in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird. She recently played a young bride in Dominic Cooke’s On Chesil Beach and was also in Michael Mayer’s screen version of The Seagull.
