So much for “All You Need Is Love.” Paul McCartney referred to Donald Trump as a “mad captain” and denounced the US president’s climate change denial in a new interview with the BBC.
McCartney has been making the press rounds in support of his new album Egypt Station, and took a moment to explain some of the more political lyrics on the new record.
The lyric in question is off of McCartney’s “Despite Repeated Warnings:” “Those who shout the loudest/May not always be the smartest.” The song explicitly outlines McCartney’s worries about the environment, and as he explained to the BBC, “I just wanted to make a song that would… say, ‘Occasionally, we’ve got a mad captain sailing this boat we’re all on and he is just going to take us to the iceberg [despite] being warned it’s not a cool idea.”
When questioned further on the “mad captain” line, McCartney added, “I mean obviously it’s Trump but there’s plenty of them about.”
The former Beatle went on, expressing his frustration about the much broader phenomenon of apathy towards environmental crisis. He stated bluntly, “People who deny climate change… I just think it’s the most stupid thing ever.”
