Metallica Now Launching Brand of “Sonic-Enhanced” Whiskeys

Band’s new label Blackened offers the chance to “taste” its signature thrash metal sounds.

Metallica fans are in for a real treat: You can now “taste” the band’s signature thrash metal sounds in the form of a new whiskey, called Blackened. Per Maxim, the heavy metal band collaborated with master spirits distiller Dave Pickerell to create new blends of bourbons, ryes, and whiskeys that are finished using low-hertz frequencies from Metallica’s many head-banging tracks.

The distillery’s website describes the “sonic enhancement” process, saying that the whiskey is “pummeled by sound, causing it to seep deeper into the barrel, where it picks up addition wood flavor characteristics.”

“This just kicks the finishing process up a notch,” Pickerell told Maxim. The sonic enhancements shake the whiskey molecules to their core. At a low-enough frequency, flavor elements start to work their way out of the barrels and into the blend.”

The end result is a multi-layered, 90 proof brown spirit. You can also listen to the songs that shaped each bottle via playlists curated by major streaming services.
