Megyn Kelly has been working hard lately to change her ratings funk. Her NBC show, Megyn Kelly Today, has placed new emphasis on emotional topics. She interviewed a group of transgender teens who came out on her show, she talked to a Stamford, Conn., firefighter about finding the bodies of children, and she spoke to a man who decided to forgive his son after the son killed other members of their family. Kelly is even doing cooking demonstrations and giving away prizes, staples of morning shows that air at that 9 a.m. hour.

But Kelly has publicly said she wants her show to have depth and nuance. “I feel like if we do enough of those shows over time, people will understand they can turn to us for meaningful, respectful, strong storytelling,” she told Variety. “We are putting chips in the bank with our audience.”

Kelly  rocketed to primetime stardom while at Fox News, but when she jumped ship to move to an NBC morning program, her viewers didn’t follow. Megyn Kelly Today has earned an average of 2.46 million season to date as of March 25. Kelly admitted to Variety that her show is a work in progress, but she knows she has to work to “earn the trust of the audience.” She claims she is willing to do that work.
