Jonathan Goldsmith is better known as Dos Equis’ original Most Interesting Man in the World. He fully embodied the character, known for his remarkable and often impossible exploits. For nearly nine years, Goldsmith inspired countless memes and put up numbers for the brand along the way. In 2016, Goldsmith was replaced with French actor Augustin Legrand, which was supposedly a younger but equally interesting version of “the man.” It didn’t take. Sales of Dos Equis have slumped and the brand is retiring the character, and Legrand with it, reports Esquire. Goldsmith, who acted opposite Clint Eastwood and Burt Lancaster decades before he became the Most Interesting Man, has moved on. He now works with an award-winning tequila and mezcal brand, Astral, and according to Esquire, it seems like he couldn’t be happier. Goldsmith said he was sad to see the campaign come to a close, but wishes Legrand well. Goldsmith didn’t want to leave the character he created. He thought the timing of it “was ill-advised, and apparently it was.” But he didn’t let it get him down, telling Esquire, “One door closes, ten open.” He likes tequila straight, on the rocks, with a little chunk of lime. The best Bloody Mary he’s ever had is with mezcal.

And how can we all become the Most Interesting Man? “To be interesting, you have to be interested. Broaden your horizons, step out of your comfort zone. Life is like a parade that most people watch, and I think very few people get in and participate. Partake in your own journey. And also give back! The more you give, the more you get back. And the better you feel.”
