Comedian Jimmy Kimmel struck a sober chord on Thursday night, getting emotional on his late-night show as he recounted details of the shooting in south Florida that killed 17 and injured more than a dozen more. Following clips of President Trump’s statement about the shooting, Kimmel said he agreed with the president’s points about safety and fear in America’s schools — and pled with him to do good on his promise to bring common sense to the White House.

“Tell Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell and Marco Rubio…that what we need are laws, real laws, that do everything possible to keep assault rifles out of the hands of people who are going to shoot our kids…that is a perfect example of the common sense you told us you were going to bring to the White House. It’s time to bring it. We need it.”
