For the second straight October, Justin Verlander is having a moment. Fresh off his first championship run with the Houston Astros, the ace and husband to Kate Upton will take on the Boston Red Sox in the ALCS with a fourth career trip to the World Series on the line. Verlander recently opened up about his favorite date nights and strange superstitions.

For beloved celebrity duo Verlander and Upton, a good meal is important. “We are foodies so I think a typical date night would be going out to dinner and a movie,” Verlander told Maxim.

As for preparing for his starts, Verlander often begins with a little Eminem. Like any veteran ball player, Verlander has his superstitions, in his case, an allegiance to the number three. “I do things in numbers of 3’s,” Verlander told Maxim. “I use the 3 bathroom stall, I use the soap jar and pump 3 times. I use 3 paper towels. Big on the number 3.”

Verlander also said that he has not started making plans for life after baseball, but it will certainly involve a lot of golf.
