Former FBI Director James Comey appeared on Stephen Colbert’s Late Show Tuesday night to tout his new book, A Higher Loyalty, which delves into his experience working with the Trump Administration until he was unceremoniously fired in May 2017. Telling Colbert he wrote the newly released book he wanted to be “useful,” the two sipped pinot noir out of paper cups and discussed some of the most contentious points between Comey and the president.

“He has called you slippery Jim, he has called you a slimeball,” Colbert told Comey, reading from the president’s Twitter feed. “Anything to say back?”

“No,” Comey said. “He’s tweeted at me probably 50 times. I’ve been gone for a year, I’m like a breakup he can’t get over, he wakes up in the morning…” Comey trailed off to applause. “I’m out there living my best life, he wakes up in the morning and tweets at me.”

Colbert also asked Comey if the ex-FBI director thinks the president still has the opportunity to “be an ethical leader” and “turn his presidency around” — to which Comey said it would be “very hard given who he is as a person.”

Take a look at the full interview below. See Comey’s remarks about the president and ethical leadership around the four-minute mark.
