In an excerpt from his new book, “The Right Side of History: How Reason and Moral Purpose Made the West Great,” Ben Shapiro asks why we Americans are throwing away the “best world that has ever existed.” Shapiro, a political commentator, writes that suicide rates and depression are skyrocketing, drug overdoses are becoming increasingly common, and facts are less important than feelings.

In the excerpt published by The New York Post, Shapiro details the time he was supposed to give a speech to the Young America’s Foundation group at California State University at Los Angeles. There were major protests, so much that Shapiro hired security to get him into the building, and during his talk, someone pulled the fire alarm and the lights went out. Shapiro writes that he spoke through it, refusing to allow the disruptions to stop him from exercising his free-speech right.

According to Shapiro, this event, along with many others, shows him that “we are watching our civilization collapse into age-old tribalism, individualistic hedonism and moral subjectivism.” He worries that though it took humans 3,000 years to get to where we are, we might lose all of it in one generation.

Shapiro’s book will be published March 19.
