Men of the world who are considered to be particularly handsome may have one thing to worry about — if could be a hindrance to their professional lives.

A recent study conducted between the U.S. and the U.K. found that good-looking men are sometimes seen by their bosses as a threat, making it harder for them to advance in the workplace and land equal roles to their less-attractive managers, GQ reported.

The study also found that when men were hiring other men to work alongside them, they were less likely to give a hotter guy an offer.

“Managers are affected by stereotypes and make hiring decisions to serve their own self-interests so organizations may not get the most competent candidates,” lead researcher Sun Young Lee said. “With more companies involving employees in recruitment processes, this important point needs attention. Awareness that hiring is affected by potential work relationships and stereotyping tendencies can help organizations improve their selection processes.”

Women’s perceived levels of attractiveness had no bearing on their career progression, the study said.
