Since its launch in July of last year, the game Fortnite has risen to become the most important video game currently in existence, reports New York Magazine, and has been played by 125 million people. The game is pretty simple: Based on a colorful island spotted with abandoned houses, towns, soccer fields, food trucks, and missile silos, players put on colorful costumes, drop out of floating school bus and immediately start building ramshackle forts. Then, they all kill each other.

When the game was released for Nintendo Switch, it was downloaded more than 2 million times in 24 hours. Analysts estimate that Fortnite is currently aking in more than $300 million a month, while its maker, Epic Games, has made more than $1.2 billion since the battle royale mode launched in late September. The game is free to download and play unrestricted bu the money comes from optional transactions that let users purchase new costumes, ideas, and dance moves for their avatars.
