Suspect Arrested In Rape, Slaying of Bulgarian Journalist

Viktoria Marinova was the host of a new talk show that offered a venue for investigative reporters.

German police have arrested a suspect in the rape and killing of a Bulgarian television journalist, whose work highlighted corruption in the East European country, reports ABC News.

Bulgaria’s prosecutor general, Sotir Tsatsarov, confirmed the arrest of Severin Krassimirov, a 21-year-old Bulgarian citizen.

Investigators found evidence on the clothes and body of Viktoria Marinova, who was raped and strangled early Saturday afternoon. She was the host of a new talk show called “Detector” that offered a venue for investigative reporters, according to The New York Times. The minister said there is no apparent link to her work and that it was a “spontaneous attack,” but investigators are still examining “all possible lines of investigation.”

Two other journalists were killed in the past year in the European Union because of the work they were doing to expose graft at the highest levels of government.
