Jimmy Kimmel wasn’t impressed with the executive order the president issued on Wednesday, which halted the separation of illegal immigrant parents from their children at the U.S.-Mexico border and now forcibly detain entire families instead. The memo signed by Trump came more than two months after his Department of Homeland Security had begun a new “zero tolerance” policy that treated any adult attempting to immigrate or seek asylum in the U.S. without documentation as criminals to be prosecuted.
“Yes, thank you, Mr. President, for lighting the house on fire and now taking credit for putting the fire out,” Kimmel said.
The comedian instead gave credit to the massive public outcry over the controversial policy as having forced the president’s hand.
“It is amazing what a national outpouring of rage can do to suddenly make an executive order that wasn’t possible, possible,” Kimmel said. “And to those of you who called your Congress people, and tweeted, and tracked those monsters down at dinner to let them know what was happening is unacceptable, well done. Very well done.”
