Set fans on stunned: Negotiations have broken down between producers of Star Trek 4 and the film’s two biggest stars, Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth, according to a stunning report in The Hollywood Reporter.

Having those two stars exit puts the fourth installment in the rebooted franchise in serious jeopardy, even as deals are close to being done with the rest of the major cast, including Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg. Reps for Pine and Hemsworth have apparently left the table because of the wide gulf in compensation. Both of the Chrises have risen to Hollywood’s A-list because of their respective roles in the DC and Marvel Cinematic Universe. But Paramount is trying to keep the budget expectations down to Earth because Star Trek isn’t in the Marvel orbit. The last installment, Star Trek Beyond, grossed $343 million globally on a budget of $190 million — not exactly Avengers-level numbers.
