Man Plants Bomb in North Carolina Airport, No Major Networks Cover It

Sharp nails, bullets, ammonium nitrate and fuel oil were found inside the bomb.

A man with an improvised explosive device set to explode at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, was arrested this week at Asheville Regional Airport in North Carolina after he tried to drop the bag and bomb-sniffing dogs found “dangerous materials” inside it, The Intercept’s Shaun King reports. But what makes this remarkable, King points out, is not that the terror attack was thwarted. Sharp nails, bullets as well as  ammonium nitrate and fuel oil were found inside the bomb, and the suspect, Michael Christopher Estes, admitted he was “preparing to fight a war on U.S. soil.”

King argues that if the suspect had been Muslim, Mexican or an immigrant, the story would have spread across the internet and major TV news networks immediately. The president himself, King argues, would be tweeting about it. But because he was white, the American people were largely unaware that it even happened.

“A Muslim attacker’s mugshot would become a meme across the conservative media. Mainstream American outlets would be covering the heroic bravery of those who thwarted the terrorist plot,” King writes.

“The fundamentally bigoted double standard by which it is done to virtually everyone except for Michael Christopher Estes and other white men has to stop.”
