Historic cars often come with a list of pertinent notes to match. When it comes to this Ferrari 250 GTO, that list could go on forever and grows to this day. The second of its kind ever built, the classic muscle car continues to etch its way into the annals of auto history more than 50 years later with the highest-ever asking price for a vehicle—a cool $56.8 million.
Coming out of long-term ownership, Talacrest—a Ferrari-specific auto retailer—has put the 1962 GTO up for sale in perfect condition. Completed on March 16, 1962, the car immediately was a favorite at the Monza test track for Scuderia Ferrari, the automaker’s professional racing division. The first 250 GTO to compete in a race (taking second), the car has an impressive record placing in 17 out of its 27 total races. It placed 6th overall at the 1962 Le Mans 24-hour race and finished first in the experimental class.
After completing its racing career with the utmost distinction, the 250 GTO was owned by several collectors until it was purchased by Stephen Griswold, who’s restoration shop returned the car to its former glory. From there, the Ferrari traded hands twice before landing in its current owner’s hands. Given the car’s well-documented history, Talacrest claims it’s ready to race in the next 250 GTO tour in 2017. The Ferrari experts, having been involved in eight transactions with newer editions, say this is an extremely rare opportunity to purchase one of the most desirable cars in the world
