This new, fully electric motorcycle also functions as a battery while parked.

The Johammer J1, described by company founder Johann Hammerschmid as “a natural return to the concept of the horse, before there was noise and pollution from engines,” is the first electric motorcycle to clear more than 186 miles on one charge. Its top speed is 75 mph, and it features polypropylene body cladding and center-hub steering.

Curiously, the bike displays data on the rear-view mirrors instead of a dashboard, and it has a reverse gear for parking. It’s an unorthodox machine, to say the least, but the engineering behind it is impressive.

So are those batteries. Each Johammer motorcycle battery is comprised of over 1,200 individual cells, which can hold 12 kilowatt hours; comparisons to the Tesla Powerwall have already been made.

But it’s the projected improvements that make this thing so forward-thinking. Future models of the Johammer will feature a battery that can be plugged into a home’s solar panels, giving it a dual function that would be a first among automobiles. Johammer is crowdfunding this effort and could spark an automotive revolution if they hit their goals.
