Sotheby’s June 21st “Impressionist and Modern Art” sale includes an important early Cubist work from Pablo Picasso. Entitled “Femme Assise” and completed in 1909, the painting depicts French model Fernande Olivier, who sat for over 60 Picasso paintings. It’s the first time in 43 years the piece has been up for auction at Sotheby’s, last selling in London in December 1973; and was most recently on display at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. It has a pre-auction estimate in excess of $44 million.
