Regardless of whether or not President Trump told members of his Bedminster golf club that the “White House is a real dump”—a claim he denies—the President’s home is undergoing major renovations from August 4 through 20, according to Town & Country. A White House spokesperson told the outlet that the renovation is “more out of necessity than cosmetic,” and was approved under the Obama administration.
“Many of the existing systems are in dire need of repair and replacement, which is why this renovation is so crucial. The GSA teams will be working around the clock to complete these projects; they’re preparing to have people here 24/7,” the spokesperson told Town & Country.
The work includes refurbishing cracked stairs leading into the White House from the South Lawn, which have not been restored in 64 years, as well as upgrading the HVAC system, which is 27 years old and runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Temporary stairs by the press briefing room will be removed, and water leaks in the lower press area of the West Wing will also be repaired, among other upgrades.
President Trump will spend the next two-and-a-half weeks at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, while the renovations are underway.
