Say this for the architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox: They do not lack in ambition. KPF has conceived a new district for Tokyo that could accommodate 500,000 residents and would exist on a man-made archipelago, complete with a mile-high, 420-story skyscraper.
The Next Tokyo 2045 concept places a priority on protecting the area from earthquakes, typhoons, and rising sea levels through a series of infrastructural elements. These include operable floodgates and a massive series of hexagonal rings designed to minimize the impact of waves.
