Used shipping containers are making a splash in backyards everywhere. Modpools, a Canadian company husband and wife team, now uses old shipping containers to create above- and below-ground pools and Jacuzzis.

The couple, Paul and Denise Rathnam, based out of Abbotsford, British Columbia, are veterans of the shipping container industry.

After a sun-filled vacation to California, the Rathnams were inspired by the small-sized pools they saw in the Golden State. A year-and-a-half later, the Modpools were ready to go.

Containers come straight from China full of goods. Once they are unloaded they are delivered to the Rathnam’s factory.

The duo does the dirty work of customizing containers to make them pool-ready, such as adding a sanitation filter, specialized lights and Jacuzzi jets that control temperature, features that can be controlled remotely by a smartphone app or tablet. Users can also enjoy spa-like waves that the company says are good for low-impact aerobics or soothing physical ailments.
