Time-Lapse Video Turns Natural Destruction Into Beauty

There’s something beyond captivating about watching a tornado mete out its destructive forces. Filmmaker Mike Olbinski spent the spring chasing the powerful storms that spawn them throughout “Tornado Alley“—the region comprised of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, Colorado, North Dakota, and Minnesota.

Olbinski spent 18 days chasing storms, driving over 20,000 miles across nine states, taking 60,000 photographs to compile into a six-minute video. The Phoenix-based photographer’s goal was to capture one tornado on a time-lapse. In the end, he recorded six. Watch the fruits of Olbinski’s labor in the short film, “Vorticity,” below.
